Nepal Kayak Club: Marshyangdi Express

2014 – 2015 has been a fantastic year for the Nepal Kayak Club! We were awarded the Canoe and Kayak Magazine’s Paddle with Purpose Award[1] and hosted a successful 4th Round of the Himalayan Whitewater Festival.

The event of our dreams…

This October we are launching the 1st ever ‘extreme race’ in our mighty Himalayan Rivers with the “Marshyangdi Express” – a dream event! Join us in remembrance, celebration, and hydro-awareness of the amazing Marshyangdi.

The Marshyangdi River

The Marshyandi River drains off the world famous Annapurna mountain range. This spectacular river has plenty to offer for comfortable 4+ kayakers to extreme kayakers. Its steepness and beauty makes it a must for the bucket list of paddlers seeking world-class thrills.

Damning on the Marshyangdi

Unfortunately, the easy access and steep gradient has also led to the interest of hydropower development. The Marshyangdi has two completed dams and building for the third has already begun. The Nepal Kayak Club’s ‘Marshyangdi Express’, may become the first and the last event on this world-class river.

Who and what will the event involve?

This kayak championship will attract both local and international participants as well as scores of spectators from various adventures-sports. Among a host of events, competitions include Downriver Sprint & Giant slalom for both male and female participants(please note participants must be 18+).

The Marshyangdi Express and the Himalayan White Water Festival

The Himalayan White Water Festival was started by the Nepal Kayak Club to provide support for the next generation of Nepalese kayakers. The up-and-coming Nepalese paddlers possess great potential and natural talent, but lack the equipment, training, and guidance needed to make it to professional and world-class levels.

The extreme ‘Marshyangdi Express’ festival has been developed to inspire our younger generations and expose them to the opportunities of an international grade paddle competition.
